Bentley's luxury Bentayga SUV gets plug-in power
Bentleys - they're fast but quiet, a symbol of luxurious power. But now, for the first time, a Bentley is going to be ultra quiet.
Because the luxury SUV is getting plug-in hybrid power that will let it whisper around the streets of London's Mayfair in zero emission mode.
Not bad for such a large SUV that's capable of blasting to 60mph in 5.2 seconds.
The secret is the 3.0-litre V6 engine that's mated to a battery that can deliver 94kW at peak power when required.
Stick the 4x4 Bentayga in EV Drive mode, and it is driven only with energy supplied from the battery to the wheels via the electric motor. In this zero emission mode, it has a range of 24 miles.
Choose Hybrid Mode and the luxury SUV uses information from the navigation system to intelligently control power use from the battery and the petrol engine, giving maximum efficiency and range.
Finally, in Hold mode both engine and electric power is balanced to maintain electric range for later use – for example on arriving in a city. In all modes energy is recovered to the battery through regeneration during deceleration.
The high voltage battery can be recharged in just 2.5 hours. Probably enough time to recharge your champagne glasses several times!
If you fancy the new Bentley Bentayga Hybrid then no doubt you won't flinch at the thought of paying from £133,100 for the handcrafted SUV.
